Why I Study Cognitive Psychology January 29, 2010

It is important to think about the benefits of studying Cognitive Psychology as a future instructional designer because I can see what I should watch out, how interpret the learning process or which direction I would go.

I think the cognitive psychology is about input, output, and mind. Mind would vary according to individual nature, but output can vary how input materials work with mind. Sometimes, the process of input can influence the mind or output. The input would be my instructional designs. To be satisfied with my designs’ output, I need to the framework between input, output, and mind. That’s the first reason why I study Cognitive Psychology.

The second reason is that I can get useful examples from it. Sternberg, the author of the textbook, said that we can learn from history of this field or of any other field (pg3). We can notice where we are from and where we are heading. Also we can prevent the same mistakes from the past. It would be more practical for me to design good instructions with the appropriate direction and some ideas of failure from the past.

Finally, I believe this study is reliable because the right key ideas in Cognitive Psychology. (pg26)  Here are the key ideas:

  1. Experimental data is important in this field and it can be fully understood in the context of an explanatory theory.
  2. Cognition is dealt as a general issue. Freudian analysis or post-modern scream therapy principles deals with too specific cases.
  3. It allows considering interaction between cognitive and non cognitive processes. That’s reasonable not extreme.
  4. This study is based on scientific researches.
  5. All researches can be applied.

These key ideas help me to follow with more logical, less error materials or prevent errors for instructional design.

Therefore, I can learn many useful examples and data like case studies I can’t do as an individual.

This is my map for direction of this study. It will be revised according to my further studying)

Technology- based learning environments

Filed under: CECS 5510 Technology- based learning environments — Echang @ 4:42 pm

I am really looking forward to this class because this is a very good chance to organize my studying goals.

I have learned and experienced a lot learning technologies throught the program, and this is time to connect learning goals and objectives with learning technologies applying my experiences practically.

Therefore I like 5 tasks for this course:

  • Dictionary-

I have some lists for them and still need to know more. For me I may work with my country’s people, so I need to list up the terminology both in universal language form and my own language( that’s clearer to understand)

Therefore, I will keep bilingual list for me .

  • 10  online senarios-

I am a senario writer actually and I really need it for my family and country. Because of my hunsband job, our family would be exposed in world wide learning environment. If we learn something more effectively and integrate what we learn every time, we need to stick to online materials. Therefore, I eager to analyze current online learning environments and figure out what further  renovation would be needed in pratical  and real life using them. I am trying to make some online materials for my family’s learning at this moment, so it would be great helps to find case studies or model cases.

  • Mapping online Communication and ID

I believe image is really effective method to organize my thoughts and instructional design. That will be a clear guide for me to archive learning bjectives and task objectives.   I want to have a framework  for a big picture.

  • Research proposal

Since 2006, I have worked with a writing club for my daughter and her friends. Now I am working for for ESL student of Sunday school in the church. I want to make a guide book for teachers and students using technologies in their biblical education.

  • Blog

It will be a good organizer and reflection of my studying. I hope it works effectively. meeting1

Yesterday, I used it for my class meeting for the first time. I have used IM in my native language for my work conferences, friend’s meeting, or just killing time chatting. However, IM in non native language was interrupting my cognitive process in some ways.

First, I could not texting so quickly to keep up with the conversation. I prefer web cam chatting to text chatting, but I am not sure about web cam chatting in non native language. I can experience it for the next time. Oh, how sorry that I am not a texting generation.

Second, I could not read previous contents if somebody else posted new sentences while I was reading old one. The text screen changed very fast and the sentences went away before I recognized. I found out some more lines between the comments when I read whole text later.

Third, there is no mouse over dictionary function during IM session. I think it should be essential. While I am reading I feel comfortable with using mouse over dictionary to find words’ definitions. IM passes to fast, so I need the function practically for quick understanding.

I learned the certain work happens while we are learning from a book titled e-learning by Clark, R.C & Mayer, R.E.

When we learn something through the multimedia lessons, the images and printed words enter the learners’ cognitive processing system through the eyes, and spoken words enter though the ears. In working memory, the information is organized as verbal models and pictorial models. Then they are integrated with previous knowledge from the long term memory.

Figure 2.1 Cognitive theory of multimedia Learning

Presentation      senses                              working memory                                                              long term memory

Words                  ears   selecting sounds     organizing        verbal model       integrating     prior knowledge

pictures              eyes    selecting images                              pictorial model

For this process, I was interrupted in selecting and organizing steps failing in understanding non native language IM messages.

Now I need some strategies for the next meeting. My aim will be for me to engage in appropriate cognitive processing during IM learning. I will try to prepare some sentences which I would like to speak regarding main topic and image materials delivering my thoughts or opinions. I mean I will try to find some methods to utilize my discussion skills as a non- native speaker.

I liked the three metaphors of learning which the authors of the book introduced on page 34.

There are three metaphors of learning:

Learning is                        Learner is                                     instructor is

Response strengthening        Strengthening or              Passive recipient of                     Dispenser of

weaking of association         rewards and punishments         and punishments

Information acquisition           adding information            Passive recipient of                    Dispenser of

                                                              to memory                            information                                  information

Knowledge construction        Building a mental                    Active sense maker                 cognitive guide

According to the information above, it is better to think for my three types of learning processes.

For response strengthen, I can prepare some texts or visual materials help delivery of my opinions.

I like Dr. W’s rewards of encouraging students every time. I think I can survive with them, so I very appreciate him for it.

For information acquisition, I need an online dictionary and a glossary list beside me.

For knowledge construction, I need to know how to record the voice or video chatting for later working. I can use them later for my information construction. I will miss some chances to integrate on-goimg issues with prior knowledge during IM, but it will be more practical experiment of my communication skill training in IM.

Hi, I am Chang, EunJoo.

I have worked as a scriptwriter for the educational TV programs over 10 years, so I would like to learn how to use new technologies for my field to help learners effectively. For this class, I am looking forward to learning more theoretical backgrounds to improve teaching skills or delivering information effectively. I am not good at using new technology, but I like to be a techno person who can utilize essential skills in learning for my audience and for myself. I am living in Coppell about 30 min. away from UNT.
